Obtaining a Teaching Degree Online

pcpro.edu

The demand for teachers will not stop, and within the next ten years this demand should increase according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). To get started with an online teaching degree, you must realize that teaching online is much different than that of an in-class atmosphere. Lessons and curriculum that you will have to create can take the shape of downloads, videos, media presentations and other digital forms, can now be taught.

Most states will require that you complete a teaching degree and depending on the field, they can require a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph. D. Certifications must also be completed to make sure that you are competent in the basics of math, reading, and writing. Completing teaching certificates do not have to be done after you have earned your degree. Earning a teaching certificate can be earned while you are still in your Bachelor’s program. There are over 550 online accredited programs that you can complete in the US, all accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Different states will require different requirements, so make sure that the online program you are intending to complete fits the intended state.

Experience with student teaching is also required as a part of the certification. Different degrees require different amounts of student teaching hours completed, the average being around 900 hours. The hours are also to be completed in a classroom-based environment, none online. Students are also required to be proficient in the field of study they want to teach in. Elementary school teachers usually have a wide range of knowledge, letting them teach many different subjects. Middle school teaching requires a specific focus area such as a language, science, social studies or math. When students are looking to specialize in an area, it is usually recommended that you first study and major in that area, and then complete education coursework. It can also go the other way around but some schools feel that learning one over the other first is a great way to know the field.

There are different teaching degrees that can be earned online for different levels of education. For early childhood education, an early childhood education program will let students pursue their teaching in daycare, pre-k and kindergarten. An ECE program is usually a prerequisite for pursuit of a higher degree. Elementary education programs is consisted of teaching specific areas like reading, math, foreign languages, or phys. ed. Bachelor degrees are needed in order to really be able to teach anything, but there are Post-Bac and Master’s programs meant for more advanced learning in the same age group.

With high school and secondary education, students must choose a subject to specialize in. Work histories in fields such as history, math, different sciences, etc. are usually required. Certificates programs are available to help get you the 1 or two years needed of specialized teaching experience.

More schools are becoming online-based, or will have online classes as an option for their students. There will always be a demand for teachers, and with the flexibility and convenience, training to become an educator is a lot simpler than it used to be.
